What is the Hash Generator?

The Hash Generator computes MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 checksums for any text or file in your browser. Use it to verify that a download matches its published checksum, compare two files without opening them, or produce fingerprints for caching and deduplication, without uploading the data anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Type text or choose a file.
  2. Pick the algorithm, or view them all.
  3. Copy the hash or compare it with an expected value.

Features

  • MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512
  • Hash text or local files
  • Hex output ready to copy
  • Files are read locally and never uploaded

Frequently asked questions

Is my file or text sent to a server?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your file or text never leaves your device, nothing is logged, and it keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

Which hash algorithm should I use?

Use SHA-256 or SHA-512 for integrity checks. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security purposes and only suit legacy checksums. For storing passwords use a slow algorithm such as bcrypt or Argon2, not a plain hash.

How do I verify a file checksum?

Choose the downloaded file, select the algorithm the publisher used (usually SHA-256) and compare the result with the checksum on their site. If they match, the file has not been altered.
